Como, situated at the south extremity of the Western
Lake shore, gives its name to the Lake; it is a city with very ancient
traditions. It was founded more than two thousand years ago from Romans and is
actually the vital territory centre, where history, art and culture live
together with industry and trade in a scenery of unique beauty thanks to the
Lake, with its continuous change of colours and atmosphers during the different seasons.
The city
of Como is well known for its silk as well, unique in the world what
originality and refinement concerns. Como offers you museums, monuments and
churches. The historical centre, which goes from the shore to the medieval
walls dating back to the XII century includes the cathedral, the Broletto and S.Fedele church, all
with a Gothic-Romanesque origin. The real heart of the city has been the square
in front of S.Fedele church. It was the forum during
the Roman period and during the Middle Ages the corn market took place there.
Not distant is the dome square where you can admire the big cathedral, and the Broletto, which is seat of shows and exhibitions. Outside
the walls there are other important monuments, as Casa del Fascio
or Monumento ai Caduti.
There are also magnificent villas from the XVIII
century surrounded by luxurious parks with regal appearance. among Como villas,
Villa Olmo is surely the most famous and sumptuous
one. Another attraction is the funicular Como/Brunate
which allows you to look at the wonderful landscape on the whole Lakes
district.
In the
city of Como you also have the possibility to buy original and refined articles
from Italian handcraft, silk and clothes and everything is connected to the
"made in Italy".
